Original score for a Korean period animation

AnimationOriginal SoundtrackSong Production

A dark, intense Laftel original sageuk. The score carries the particular colour of the webtoon it came from.

Challenge

‘Red Fox’ drew 15.94 million views on KakaoPage and became a steady seller in print. Laftel brought it back as an original animation, and the score had to carry the desire and fear running between people, spirits and gods all the way to full immersion.

The score had to do three things:

An Eastern colour, not a costume

The world is Korean and old, but the storytelling is contemporary. The palette had to sound Eastern without turning into pastiche.

A voice for each character

The fox, Sana, Bari: each wants something different. The audience had to hear whose scene it is before anyone speaks.

Accuracy at the cue level

Dozens of separate cues per episode, each written to one turn of emotion rather than laid over a whole sequence.

The fox
Approach

We started from the characters, not the scenes. The fox’s obsession, Sana’s fear, Bari’s scheming: each was given its own line first, and the cues were written from those lines.

The Eastern colour was treated as grammar rather than decoration: it sits in the intervals and the phrasing, so it never reads as a costume laid over a modern score.

Songs were written alongside the score, so the vocal moments grow out of the same material instead of arriving from outside the film.

Recording and the final mix were finished in our own studio, and the cues were delivered ready for the episode edit.

The feeling is decided first,
the melody comes after it.

Solution

One world, told through the people inside it.

The score is built from character lines that recur, change and finally collide, so a viewer follows the story through sound as well as picture.

A theme per character

Recurring lines for the fox, Sana and Bari let a scene declare whose story it is within a bar or two.

Written cue by cue

Thirty-five separate cues carry the episodes, each one written to a single turn of feeling rather than a whole sequence.

A song that holds the whole thing

The OST single distils the story into one vocal piece, so the world travels beyond the episodes.
